Beacon Students Attend Great Books Summer Program

Three members of Beacon Academy’s Class of 2009 took part in a transformational week at Great Books Summer Program on the campus of Amherst College this past summer. Thanks to the generosity of Great Books, Hui Lu, Dellandre Smith, and Diana Aguirre engaged with college professors and other talented students from all over the world to read together great works of literature and participate in a vital intellectual community.

The Great Books Program inspires junior high and high school students by engaging them with leading scholars and some of with the world’s best literature, in a community of kids and counselors who build new friendships living together on one of the most beautiful college campuses in the summer.

Here is a report from Hui Lu:

“I think Great Books is an amazing summer program, that helped me get a better sense of what it is like to live away from my parents — to live independently for a week. I personally like the way this program set up, such as spending time with professors to go over and discuss what we read last night in the reading. Most of the readings are classic literature. They are very rigorous and intense readings.

My highlights for the week were Arts Elective and Literature Elective. In literature, I studied Anton Chekhov’s writings. Some of his writings were quite ambiguous. We talked very briefly about the plot and paid a lot more attention to the details. That was where his stories started to make more sense to me, when we asked ourselves questions.

In Arts Elective, I learned how to turn a book into art. The project including destroying innocent books. I learned to get comfortable with scissors and sharp knives to tear the books apart. The sound of paper tearing apart the book made me feel like someone is stabbing my heart with a sharp knife. Eventually, I made my creation, and it turned out to be lovely.”
