4th Annual Symposium

An Honest Conversation about Race, Class & Economics in Independent Schools
Thursday, November 17, 2011
9am - 2pm

Faculty, board members, parents, and friends are all welcome to join in conversations and strategy sessions focused on race, class and economics in independent schools. This year we will start with a short video and remarks to set the tone and underscore the urgency and importance of our continued work together and then break into smaller groups led by leadership from the sponsoring schools.

Smaller group work will include:
  • academic achievement gaps by race or class
  • parent involvement
  • raising more money for financial aid
  • admissions challenges
  • dorm issues
  • the college application process for students from low-income families

Museum of Fine Arts Program
Since our inception in September 2005, we have partnered with the Education Department at the Museum of Fine Arts to provide a deep and meaningful introduction to art for the Beacon students. They will visit the Museum 19 times this year through the Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) program. Join us for a formal presentation each time in the Riley Seminar Room from 1:30 to 2:15 pm and then travel through the Museum with our students as they explore master works of art and begin to absorb the power and majesty of each piece.

Museum visits are from 1:30 to 3:00 pm on the following Wednesdays: December 1, January 12, January 26, February 9, February 23, March 9, April 6, May 3 (TE).

Classroom Visits
Our teachers and students look forward to having company in the classroom. Please check our weekly calendar on the home page and contact Cindy Laba at claba@beaconacademy.org to set up a time to visit the school.
