Join Our Beacon Community

Beacon is grateful to work with over 250 volunteers each year through both short and long term engagement opportunities, both of which are very valuable to our students and alumni. Below are many ways to become involved in Beacon Academy’s work.

Volunteer Opportunities

For more information about becoming a Beacon Academy volunteer, please contact Beacon’s Development department at support@beaconacademy.org. We look forward to hearing from you!

Academy Year

SWAP-IT (Clothing Drive)

Beacon Academy’s community comes together twice a year to share and exchange clothing from their closets. Volunteers help sort and organize clothes for easy shopping, and become personal shoppers for our students to prepare them for high school interviews.

Transportation Support

Beacon Academy’s volunteer drivers help transport students to and from co-curricular activities and high school interviews during the Beacon year. In the summer months, volunteer drivers assist transporting students to and from their summer activities.

Co-Curricular Programming

Throughout the year, we seek to offer students the opportunity for broader experiences to promote learning outside of the classroom. We ask volunteers for their time and resources to help with co-curricular activities such as running, swimming, basketball, rowing, and other sports and also look for volunteer teachers for our art, finance, and health classes. Additionally, volunteers can provide cultural enrichment opportunities in the Boston area as well as trips and excursions for our students to gain new experiences in our community.

Tutors

Students in need of some extra help in English, math, and SSAT prep are assigned a volunteer tutor who works with them during the school year. Tutors tailor their work to the students’ needs, targeting their specific areas of growth to help build their skills and confidence.

Mentors

Students will be matched with a mentor in the fall. The role of the mentor is to provide support and guidance through the rigors of the Academy year and support as students transition to high school. Mentors meet regularly with their mentee throughout the year, help with transportation to high school interviews, and will maintain their relationship through the Academy year and beyond.

High School Support Pilot Initiative

Volunteers can provide academic advising for high school students and administrative support to help the Beacon Alumni Program staff fulfill alumni requests. Volunteers may also act as Class “Parents” to organize class-specific special events.

Alumni College Advising Program

Working in conjunction with students, their families, high school college counselors, and college advising staff, our volunteers support all aspects of the application process and help our alumni access the funding needed for 4 years of college.

Care Packages

Beacon alumni stay connected to our school through their high school and college years, and twice a year we send out care packages to high school and college age alumni. Volunteers help purchase care package materials and/or help put together the packages.

BeaconConnect

Our online portal, BeaconConnect, provides comprehensive support for our alumni in high school and college as they build their careers. With the help of our volunteers, BeaconConnect gives our alumni the tools to expand their professional networks, build valuable professional skills, and secure internships, summer jobs, and careers after college graduation.
